3D-printed Bikinis

3D-printed Bikinis

Using 3D printing technology to manufacture airplanes, models and violins is nothing new, but it is the first time that it has been applied to clothing manufacturing. The world's first 3D-printed bikini has come out. The fashion designer Mary Haung and 3D modeling expert Jenna. Facer used Rhino3D CAD design software to create the blueprints for 3D printed swimsuits, and complex geometries were printed by a machine.

The bikini, called N12, is the first 3D printed bikini in the world. It uses springs to connect a large number of small discs to form a unique sexy shape. In fact, the real highlight of this design is that it fits perfectly to the user's body curves and fits comfortably for any cup.

‘This bikini uses thin springs to connect thousands of discs, which allow the dense discs to expand and contract freely when faced with different body shapes, bending the right arc in the most fitting form. The design style can be achieved by writing custom code. Using this method, the aesthetic design becomes a derivative of the structural design.’ Said Designers Jenna Fizel and Mary Haung. Although the design of the disc can be expanded, contracted and adjusted according to the body shape to obtain different arcs, you can also customize a bikini that suits you better by scanning your body curve in advance. The project was developed in partnership with the 3D printing company Shapeways.

Fizel said they also used a technique called selective laser sintering (SLS), which uses very thin strings to connect countless circular sheets to weave the cloth of the swimsuit. She also wrote a computer program that changed the size, distribution, and attachment of the circular flakes to make sure the swimsuit was firm and flexible where it should be. This bikini with high tech has a less sexy name Nylon 12, and nylon is the material used to manufacture the bikini. Nylon has features of being strong, flexible, and thin, with a size of just 0.7mm, making it a great 3D printing material. In addition, it is waterproof, which is a good material for making swimsuits. Huang said that this swimsuit can be more comfortable after soaking in water.

The two designers said the manufacturing of the nylon 12 swimsuits will be completely custom. They scan the consumer's body shape and then print a tailored swimsuit. It is reported that Nylon 12 has been sold in online stores, and the current price is still expensive. The top of the swimsuit costs 200 U.S. dollars and the bottom 300. A set of swimsuits costs about 3888RMB. However, it is foreseeable that the price of this high-tech swimsuit will gradually decline with the wider application of 3D printing manufacturing technology.
