Helpful Tips for Novice Surfers

1. Take heed of sun protection

Whether it is cloudy or sunny, our skin exposed to the air for a long time would be damaged by the sun's ultraviolet rays when we surf in the sea. So it's necessary for surfers to wear waterproof sunscreen on their faces, ears, necks, hands and feet. And then, we can apply zinc sticks on our foreheads so that we'll not get sunburned. Zinc sticks are made from natural minerals and vegetable oils, which are insoluble in water and don't pollute the ocean. Notice: do not wear sunscreen around our eyes, because it's easy for the residue to enter our eyes if we fall into the sea and wipe the water on our faces with our hands.

2. Prepare long sleeve sun-proof clothing, rash guard or quick-drying clothes

Don't wear a bikini for attractive looks. Novice surfers or people who do not often enter the water are suggested to choose the tight long-sleeved rash guard to prevent themselves from getting sunburned and their skin from being worn by the board. When learning how to surf, beginners mostly use foam boards which are likely to do harm to their skin.

3. Handling and application of surfboards

When the surfboard is on the ground, it should be placed face down gently. We need to cover it with sands to keep it from being blown away if it is so windy. The surfboard can be held on the top of our heads or be clipped to our sides at a straight angle. It is important to note that never put the surfboard in front of our bodies to stop ourselves from being hit by the waves.

4. Tips for falling safely

Do not surf too close to the shore in that there are a lot of corals and rocks near the shoal area where our feet are easy to be lacerated badly. If we almost fall into the water, don't hit the water with our bellies which may increase the force area. And once we lose our balance, the first thing is to protect our heads with hands.

5. Some other tips

· Check whether the surfboard and safety rope are connected well, and do warm-up exercises before entering the water.

· Observe safety signs on beaches carefully, including don't go into the water immediately after eating and don't swim after the intake of alcohol or drugs.

· Don't surf behind others and keep a proper distance from them.

· Don't panic if we're in trouble in the water: Hold one arm straight up overhead and shake it. It's best to use the buoyancy of the water to keep our bodies afloat, stay calm and wait for help.
