The Problem with Swimsuits

From the shark skin swimsuit that became famous in the 2000 Sydney Olympics to the swimsuit of feeling pain due to stretching described by Chinese athlete Yuanhui Fu in the Rio Olympics, apart from the Olympic results, the swimsuit topic has become the focus of public attention outside the Olympic Games.

Affected by the spirit of the Olympics, swimming has become the first choice for people's consumption and fitness in this hot summer. Swimming must first choose a favored swimsuit. The reporter visited and found that consumers can buy swimwear from dozens of RMB to several hundred, or can buy shorts for 5 or 8 RMB from supermarkets, shopping malls, swimming places, wholesale markets and online stores. What is the difference in the quality of swimsuits with such a big price gap?

Jiangsu Provincial Bureau of Quality Supervision conducted a random inspection of the swimsuit’s quality, showing that the overall quality of swimsuits is not optimistic, especially the problems of swimsuits sold online, with a pass rate of only 31.2%. Many indicators are unqualified such as fiber content, color fastness to light, tensile and elastic elongation, and the swimsuit is easy to fade after some time; partial breaking leads to exposure. In addition, according to the analysis of the quality inspectors, only 25% of swimsuits priced below 100 RMB are qualified, while 67.6% of swimsuits priced above 200 RMB are qualified.

What are the common problems with swimsuits? Is there any harm in choosing a bad swimsuit? How do you choose a swimsuit with good quality and low price if you love fitness?

At present, the commonly used standards for swimwear in China are FZ/T 73013-2010 "Knitted Swimwear". FZ/T 81021-2014 "Machine Knitted Woven Swimwear", a qualified swimsuit should meet the relevant safety requirements in GB 18401-2010 "National Basic Safety Technical Specifications for Textile Products", including the content of formaldehyde, pH value, odor, being able to decompose carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes, color fastness. Moreover, it is necessary to increase the evaluation of light resistance and chlorinated water resistance (swimming pool water), color fastness to seawater due to the specificity of the swimsuit’s environment. At the same time, swimsuits need to be comfortable to wear, and the elongation of tensile elasticity, resistance to chlorinated water and tensile elastic recovery rates need to be evaluated. The performance of the seam and strength should be also checked.
